Before entering the Monument to the Discoveries, take an opportunity to stroll through the world of our planisphere and follow the oceanic routes taken by Portuguese explorers. Walk over the massive Compass Rose, decorated in multi-coloured marble!
Upon entering Padrão, you can:
• Climb to the top of the monument and find a 56 m-high terrace that offers an unparalleled view of the city and the river. From here, you can see the entire riverside area from Oeiras to Alcântara. In one glance, your eye will take in a view that includes: the Belém Tower, Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Palace, Memória Church, Ajuda National Palace, Tejo Power Station and the Belém Cultural Centre. From the terrace, you can also enjoy a delightful panoramic view of the Tagus as it flows into the Atlantic Ocean, or appreciate an unforgettable sunset.
• Go down to Level-1, a space where exhibitions are staged to encourage visitors to explore and deepen their knowledge. This space also hosts cultural and artistic events relating to the monument. Take a look at the exhibitions that have been presented since March 2012.
To make your visit more interesting, you can organise a group (minimum of 10 people) and book an appointment with the Educational Service, who will be more than happy to organise a customised tour so that you can get to know the history of Belém and this unique monument.
